A few weeks ago, I started noticing some strange marks covering parts of my car, especially on the hood and along the sides. At first glance, they looked like thin scratches or strange circular patterns trapped under the paint. I became worried immediately because I thought someone might have keyed the car, or maybe a harsh cleaning product had damaged the finish. The marks were mostly visible when sunlight hit the surface directly, creating a dull, spider-web-like reflection across the paint.
The more I looked at them, the more frustrated I became. My car had looked shiny and smooth before, so seeing those strange patterns appear almost overnight was confusing. What made it even stranger was that the marks seemed to disappear at night or in darker lighting conditions, only to become obvious again under bright sunlight.
After spending some time researching the issue, I finally discovered what was causing them. The marks are commonly known as swirl marks, and they are actually thousands of tiny micro-scratches that develop in the clear protective coating of a car’s paint. Even though they may look serious, they are incredibly common and happen to vehicles of every color and brand.
What surprised me the most was learning that the damage is often caused by normal everyday washing and cleaning habits. Things like using rough sponges, old rags, dirty towels, or automatic car washes with rotating brushes can slowly scratch the surface over time. Even wiping dust off the car with a dry cloth can create tiny abrasions that eventually become visible.
