Custard-Filled Doughnuts Recipe: Soft, Creamy, and Delicious
Custard-filled doughnuts are a classic treat that combine soft, fluffy fried dough with a rich, creamy custard filling. They are perfect for breakfast, dessert, or any time you want a sweet indulgence.
Ingredients
For the Doughnuts:
3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
½ cup warm milk
¼ cup sugar
2 large eggs
¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
A pinch of salt
Oil for frying
For the Custard Filling:
2 cups milk
4 large egg yolks
½ cup sugar
3 tablespoons cornstarch or flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional Topping:
Powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
1. Make the Dough
In a bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and a teaspoon of sugar. Let it sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
Mix in eggs, softened butter, sugar, salt, and flour gradually until a soft dough forms.
Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Cover and let it rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours, until doubled in size.
2. Prepare the Custard
In a saucepan, heat milk over medium heat.
In a separate bowl, whisk egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch until smooth.
Slowly add hot milk to the egg mixture while whisking.
Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook on medium heat until thickened, stirring constantly.
Remove from heat, stir in vanilla, and let it cool.
3. Shape and Fry Doughnuts
Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about ½ inch thickness.
Cut into rounds or desired shapes.
Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
Fry doughnuts until golden brown on both sides, about 1–2 minutes per side.
Remove and drain on paper towels.
4. Fill with Custard
Once the doughnuts are slightly cooled, use a piping bag to fill them with custard from the side.
Fill generously so each bite has creamy custard inside.
5. Optional Finishing Touch
Dust the filled doughnuts with powdered sugar for an extra sweet finish.
