Should You Pour Cooking Oil Down the Kitchen Sink?
The answer: No. You should never pour cooking oil or grease down the sink.
Why Not
Oil hardens when it cools. Even if it’s liquid when poured, it solidifies in the pipes and sticks to the sides, causing clogs over time.
Clogs are expensive and messy. Hardened grease can block water flow and even damage your plumbing.
It harms the sewer system. Grease mixes with other debris in sewers and creates large, stubborn blockages.
Hot water or soap does not prevent this — the oil can still solidify further down the pipes.
✅ Safe Ways to Dispose of Cooking Oil
Let it cool. Wait until the oil is no longer hot.
Pour into a container. Use a jar, bottle, or metal can and seal it.
Throw it in the trash. Once sealed, you can safely dispose of it.
Solidify small amounts. Mix with coffee grounds, flour, or paper towels, then throw it away.
Recycle if possible. Some places collect used cooking oil to make biodiesel or other products.
Extra Tip
Before washing dishes, wipe excess oil from pans and pots with paper towels. This keeps grease out of your drains and prevents future clogs.
