If you’ve ever opened your trash bin and discovered it full of maggots, you know how unpleasant and shocking it can be. These tiny white worms can appear incredibly fast, especially during warm weather, and once they invade a garbage can, they seem to multiply overnight. Fortunately, there are several simple and effective ways to stop maggots from taking over your trash and keep your home cleaner and fresher.
Maggots are actually the larvae of flies. Adult flies are attracted to garbage because it provides warmth, moisture, and food for their eggs. When flies land on rotting food, meat scraps, spoiled vegetables, or leaking trash bags, they can lay hundreds of eggs at once. In hot temperatures, those eggs hatch very quickly, which is why a clean bin can suddenly become infested within a day or two.
The first step to eliminating maggots is to completely empty the trash bin. Any remaining food scraps or leaking liquids will continue attracting flies. Once the garbage is removed, pour boiling water directly into the container. The heat kills maggots and destroys hidden eggs stuck in corners and cracks. Afterward, scrub the entire bin thoroughly with hot water and soap to remove odors and residue that might attract more insects.
Disinfecting the trash can is another important step. A mixture of vinegar and water works well for cleaning and neutralizing strong smells. Some people also use diluted bleach to sanitize outdoor bins. After washing, let the container dry completely before using it again because moisture creates the perfect environment for fly larvae to survive.
Preventing maggots is much easier than dealing with an infestation. One of the best methods is keeping the garbage as dry as possible. Wet trash and leaking food juices attract flies almost immediately. Sprinkling baking soda, salt, or cat litter at the bottom of the bin can help absorb moisture and reduce odors. Newspaper can also be placed underneath trash bags to soak up liquids before they collect inside the container.
