60 white coffee filters

Assorted pastel watercolor paints

Large sheet of chicken wire (at least 4 feet by 3 feet)

30 warm white fairy lights (battery-operated)

Fishing line or clear thread

Paintbrushes

Scissors

Protective gloves

Clothes hanger or similar for drying

Small hooks or nails for hanging

Optional: plastic sheeting to protect surfaces during painting

Directions

1. Begin by setting up a workspace with protective sheeting to prevent paint spills. Fill small cups with water and dilute your pastel watercolor paints to the desired shades.

2. Dip each coffee filter into the watercolor paint, one at a time, ensuring even coverage. Experiment with different levels of saturation for varied color effects.

3. Gently wring out excess paint and hang the filters on a clothes hanger to dry completely. Ensure they’re not touching to prevent colors from bleeding.

4. Once dry, prepare your chicken wire by cutting it to the desired size, around 4 feet by 3 feet, using scissors or wire cutters.

5. Arrange the dried coffee filters on the chicken wire, pinching them at the center to create a flower-like shape. Secure each by twisting or tying with fishing line or clear thread.

6. Weave the warm white fairy lights through the chicken wire, ensuring an even distribution of light throughout the flower cloud.

7. Use fishing line or clear thread to suspend the chicken wire from the porch ceiling, securing with small hooks or nails. Adjust the height to your preference.

8. Turn on the fairy lights to enjoy the enchanting glow of your floating flower cloud.

Variations & Tips

For a more vibrant effect, consider using brighter watercolor paints to create a bolder color palette. Alternatively, for a more natural look, use coffee filters in varying shades of white and cream, allowing the lights to be the primary source of color. You can also experiment with different light colors, such as soft pink or cool white, to change the mood of the installation. If a larger installation is desired, increase the number of coffee filters and expand the chicken wire size accordingly.
