Is It Necessary to Wash Ground Beef Before Cooking?

Many people wonder if rinsing ground beef before cooking makes it safer. While it might seem like a good idea, washing raw ground beef is not recommended.

Why You Should Not Wash Ground Beef

Washing doesn’t kill bacteria. Rinsing meat under water cannot remove harmful bacteria like E. coli or Salmonella. The only way to kill these bacteria is by cooking the meat thoroughly.

Washing spreads bacteria. Water splashing from rinsing can carry bacteria onto countertops, utensils, and nearby foods, increasing the risk of foodborne illness.

Ground beef is already processed safely. Store-bought ground beef is handled under hygiene standards, so rinsing isn’t needed.

What You Should Do Instead

Cook ground beef to a safe internal temperature (around 160 °F / 71 °C).

Use clean utensils and cutting boards, and keep raw meat separate from other foods.

Wash your hands thoroughly after handling raw meat.

Drain excess fat after cooking if you want leaner meat, instead of rinsing before cooking.
