I found a camera in our Airbnb

What was supposed to be a peaceful weekend getaway turned into one of the most unsettling experiences my wife and I have ever had.

After months of stressful work, we decided to book an Airbnb for a short vacation. The listing looked perfect. The photos showed a beautiful, cozy home, the reviews were overwhelmingly positive, and everything seemed trustworthy. We arrived in the afternoon, unpacked our bags, and spent the first few hours enjoying the place.

That night, while we were relaxing in the bedroom, my wife suddenly pointed toward the ceiling.

“Do you see that?” she asked.

A small light was blinking from the smoke detector directly above us.

At first, I didn’t think much of it. Many electronic devices have indicator lights, so I assumed it was completely normal. But the blinking continued, and the more I looked at it, the stranger it seemed. Something felt off.

Unable to ignore my curiosity, I grabbed a chair and carefully removed the smoke detector from the ceiling. As soon as I opened it, my heart nearly stopped.

Inside was a tiny device that looked remarkably similar to a hidden camera.

For a moment, neither of us spoke. We simply stared at it in disbelief. The realization that someone could have been watching us was terrifying. We immediately packed our belongings, left the property, and drove away as quickly as possible.

Once we were safely at another hotel, I contacted Airbnb and submitted a review describing exactly what we had discovered. I felt other travelers deserved to know what had happened.

I expected the host to apologize, deny the accusation, or at least try to explain the situation.

Instead, just a few minutes later, I received a message that made my blood run cold.

“YOU IDIOT! That’s not a camera…”

I read the message several times.

If it wasn’t a camera, then what was it?

The host never provided a clear explanation. The angry response only created more questions. Why would someone react like that if they had nothing to hide? Why was the device concealed inside a smoke detector? And why did it have a blinking light?

My wife and I spent the rest of the night discussing every possibility. Maybe it was some kind of sensor. Maybe it was a communication device. Maybe it really was a camera. The truth was that we didn’t know, and that uncertainty was perhaps the most disturbing part of all.

Over the following days, I began researching stories from other travelers. To my surprise, many people reported finding unusual devices hidden in clocks, chargers, smoke detectors, and other everyday objects. Some discoveries turned out to be harmless, while others revealed genuine privacy violations.

The experience changed the way we travel.

Now, whenever we stay in a hotel, vacation rental, or guest house, we take a few minutes to inspect the room carefully. We check smoke detectors, alarm clocks, power adapters, and any device that seems out of place. Most of the time everything is perfectly normal, but the peace of mind is worth it.

To this day, I still wonder what was hidden inside that smoke detector and whether we overreacted or uncovered something we were never supposed to see.

One thing is certain: what began as a relaxing vacation became a mystery we’ll never forget.

What would you have done if you were in our position? Would you have stayed and investigated further, or left immediately?
