Warning: Is Sleeping on Your Right Side Bad for You?

[adinserter block=”3″]

You may have seen articles claiming that sleeping on your right side is dangerous. The truth is more nuanced.

For most healthy people, sleeping on the right side is not harmful. In fact, side sleeping in general is considered one of the healthiest sleep positions because it can reduce snoring and help keep the airway open.

Why Some Experts Prefer the Left Side

The strongest evidence involves acid reflux (heartburn).

When you sleep on your right side, stomach acid may be more likely to flow toward the esophagus. Sleeping on the left side tends to keep acid lower in the stomach, which can reduce nighttime reflux symptoms.

People who may benefit from left-side sleeping include:

  • Those with acid reflux or GERD
  • Some pregnant women, especially later in pregnancy
  • People who experience nighttime heartburn

Potential Drawbacks of Side Sleeping

Whether you sleep on the left or right side, side sleeping can sometimes cause:

  • Shoulder discomfort
  • Neck pain
  • Hip pressure
  • Arm numbness if pressure is placed on a nerve

Is Right-Side Sleeping Dangerous?

For most people, no.

There is no strong scientific evidence that sleeping on your right side damages the heart or brain. Some medical experts have specifically addressed this as a myth.

In fact, some people with certain heart conditions may actually find right-side sleeping more comfortable.

What Is the Best Sleep Position?

There is no single best position for everyone.

Generally:

  • Left side: Often preferred for acid reflux and pregnancy.
  • Right side: Comfortable and safe for most people.
  • Back: Good for spinal alignment but may worsen snoring and sleep apnea.
  • Stomach: Usually the least recommended because it can strain the neck and spine.
