Those little black dots on your car’s windshield are called frits or the dot matrix. They are made of ceramic-based enamel paint baked onto the glass edges during manufacturing.

The main purposes of the black dots are:

To help bond the windshield to the car frame. The frit provides a rough surface for the adhesive to stick to, securing the windshield in place.

To protect the adhesive from UV rays and heat. The black ceramic layer shields the glue from sunlight so it doesn’t degrade over time.

To distribute heat evenly. The dot pattern helps reduce temperature differences between the black border and the rest of the glass, preventing optical distortion.

To improve aesthetics. The gradient pattern smoothly transitions from the solid black border into the clear glass, making the windshield look cleaner and more finished.

Most modern vehicles use these dots around the perimeter of the windshield. They are not just decorative—they serve real structural and safety purposes.
